Hackenberg was a great asset to Penn State under the leadership of Bill O’Brien. Following O’Brien’s departure to coach the Texans, Hackenberg’s development was somewhat stunted. His talents were not a great fit for new coach James Franklin’s spread offense and Hackenberg left Penn State to capitalize on his future. He was drafted by the Jets in the second round in 2016.
Hackenberg never played a regular season game for the Jets and was traded to the Raiders this past offseason. He was released after three weeks with the Silver and Black. The Eagles contract with Hackenberg is for one year.
While his youth and talent are definitely promising, the Eagles seem to have signed Hackenberg as a development project. He joins Carson Wentz, Nick Foles, Nate Sudfeld, and Joe Callahan in a collective of quarterback’s that is now five deep.
Carrying this number of quarterbacks is an interesting move. Is there another move forthcoming or was this a decision to strengthen preseason depth?
