The prophecy has finally been fulfilled. Back in 2015, Chip Kelly desperately tried to trade up with the Tennessee Titans to be able to draft Marcus Mariota as the quarterback of the future for the Philadelphia Eagles.
Now in 2023, Mariota finally makes his way to Philly, as the Eagles have agreed to sign him to a one-year, $5 million deal that can be worth up to $8 million with incentives.
Mariota will serve as the backup to Jalen Hurts this coming season. He is a much better match to Jalen Hurts’ playing style than Gardner Minshew was. If Hurts were to miss any games this season with an injury, Mariota will be able to slide in and run the same type of RPOs that the Eagles offense uses with Hurts.
The only downside to this signing is that the Eagles are using $5 million of their cap space, which they don’t have much of after bringing back James Bradberry, Darius Slay, and Fletcher Cox. This contract may make it difficult for the Eagles to retain C.J. Gardner-Johnson.
