If the Eagles want to continue to use Jalen Hurts as a duel threat, they will need to have a backup quarterback with a similar skillset as him so that the offense doesn’t need to alter its gamelan too much.
We saw last year when Gardner Minshew had to step in that opposing defenses didn’t fall for any of the RPOs that Minshew called, that he was never a real threat to run the ball and they could focus on the running back and the passing game.
With Minshew now a free agent, the Eagles are looking for a veteran QB to backup Jalen Hurts. The Eagles reportedly have interest in veteran quarterback Jacoby Brissett.
Last season Brissett passed for 2,608 yards, 12 touchdowns, six interceptions, and rushed for 243 yards and two rushing touchdowns.
In 76 career games (48 starts), Brissett has compiled 10,350 passing yards, 48 touchdowns, 23 interceptions, 896 rushing yards, and 15 rushing touchdowns.
He would certainly be an upgrade over Gardner Minshew, who was up and down in the three games he needed to start for the Eagles over the last two seasons. Brissett is a better passer and runner than Minshew, but might not be the full duel threat that would be the best fit.
Brissett has a connection with Nick Sirianni, as Sirianni was his offensive coordinator in Indianapolis back for three seasons (2018-2020).
