Week 2 wasn’t great for the Eagles’ secondary, and in particular for Jalen Mills. Mills struggled mightily trying to contain DeSean Jackson and was on the coverage of two backbreaking late completions. Eagles fans weren’t shy in expressing their displeasure, and Mills heard it and fired back.
Fortunately, Mills responded in Week 3. In fact, he played so well that Pro Football Focusnamed Mills one of its defensive standoutsfor the week. Here’s what PFF had to say about Mills:
CB Jalen Mills, Philadelphia Eagles, 84.4 Overall Grade
Mills was very active throughout the day, finishing with three pass breakups on the six throws in his coverage. His two pass interference penalties against T.Y. Hilton brought his grade down a bit, but ultimately, he only allowed eight yards in his coverage on the day. Across 42 snaps in coverage, that pegs him at an impressive 0.19 yards per coverage snap.
Mills has been incredibly up and down so far in his career, but at just 24 years old he has time to develop consistency. Despite the work that still needs to be done, it was great to see Mills respond to a poor performance with a bounce-back game. There’s hope that Mills can develop into a key member of what the Eagles hope will be a dominant secondary, and the resiliency and ability shown by Mills in Week 3 is encouraging.
