Possible Eagles Additions During Free Agency: DB

With only a few more days to go until free agents can begin to sign with teams, we ought to take a look at some of the top options in the defensive backfield for the Philadelphia Eagles. Let us not forget, the only starter from last year that is under contract for the 2020 season so far is Malcolm Jenkins who, by the way, also wants a new contract if he is going to be playing in midnight green in 2020.

1. CB/Safety Byron Jones

  • Jones has been linked to the Eagles all off-season with rumors and speculation. There is no secret the Eagles are in desperate need for a corner.

  • Jones' hybrid ability to play corner and safety should appeal to Jim Schwartz and his defensive scheme. Jones is fast and can make up ground if he ever gets beat.

2. CB James Bradberry

  • Most analysts do not see Bradberry returning to Carolina, after spending his first three seasons with the team. That means Bradberry most likely will hit the open market and be paid top-corner money.

  • Bradberry has put up sneaky good numbers in Carolina. Over the past two seasons, he has given up a combined passer rating of a mere 76.3.

3. Safety Justin Simmons

  • Simmons' market value is currently sitting at $14.4 million (Sportrac). It's hard imagining the Eagles paying a safety that type of money when they are looking to pay a top corner. One scenario worth watching is seeing if the Eagles cut bait with Jenkins, saving $4.7million, and allocate that cash to Justin Simmons. That is hard to imagine though.

4. CB Trae Waynes

  • Waynes was once considered a top 3-5 corner in the NFL, before falling off a bit the past two seasons. Waynes had an awful 2019 season, leading up to his free agency off-season.

5. Safety Ha-Ha Clinton-Dix

  • Three different teams in four years, is such a millennial thing to do. All jokes aside, that is a red flag to some, but Clinton-Dix is a decent safety that can help a team desperate for safety help.
