Who remembers the preseason hype surrounding Josh Adams? Much of the hype was deserved as the Central Bucks South product was a UDFA despite an impressive college resume. Eagles fans wanted “this year’s Corey Clement” and to an extent have gotten that so far. Clement’s rookie season didn’t begin with a lion share of carries, but he ended up becoming a key component on the Super Bowl team. Will this season be different for Adams?
On the year, Adams has toted the rock 20 times for 107 yards, a 5.35 YPC clip. In Week 8 before the bye, Adams carried the ball 9 times for 61 yards, and added his first career reception for 6 yards. In total, that’s about half his workload on the season. Heading into the bye, Adams made the most of his opportunities, and earned a vote of confidence from his coaches. Offensive coordinator Mike Groh spoke on the rookie back at the Nova Care complex coming off of the bye.
“I like his skill set. He’s got good size and he’s been running downhill, running behind his pads and making guys miss.” That’s good praise from an OC, but for a rookie back to be complemented on his passing down abilities is great praise. Groh went on to say “He’s got good hands and he’s been on his assignments from a protection standpoint, which is the hardest thing for most rookie backs to do. He’s been on it, and he’s demonstrated that in practice and earned people’s trust.”
Earning trust as a rookie back and running behind your pads while making defenders miss will take you far as a back in the NFL. With Sproles reaggrevating his hamstring injury, expect to see much more of the 6 foot 2, 225lb Central Bucks South product this Sunday.
