Coming into the 2018 season, the Eagles thought they had their running back situation figured out. In their 2017 season they relied on a running back by committee, which was successful enough to help bring the Lombardi Trophy to Philadelphia for the first time. This year looked like it was going to be heavy doses of Jay Ajayi, with Corey Clement and Darren Sproles brought in to change the pace.
With all three of those backs suffering injuries this season, it appears that the Eagles have found a new back who is ready to take the bulk of the Eagles' carries - and he wasn't even drafted this year.
Josh Adams was an undrafted free agent who was signed by the Eagles immediately after the draft. He was regarded as one of the best players who didn't get picked, and many analysts lauded that the Eagles got a steal and would be able to make him a valuable part of the offense. He ended up just barely missing the cut to make the initial 53-man roster, but was soon brought back after Darren Sproles and Jay Ajayi suffered injuries early in the season.
Once he was brought in, Adams worked his way up the depth chart, and over the last month he has been able to slowly turn himself into the Eagles most reliable running back.
The only highlight that came from the Eagles demoralizing loss to the New Orleans Saints was his 28-yard touchdown run, which was Adams' first career touchdown.
With the Eagles currently sitting at 4-6 and two games out of first place, it appears the Eagles will continue to lean on Adams in the running game. If the Eagles get eliminated from the playoff picture before the final game of the season, it would make sense for the team to give Adams as many snaps as possible so the team can decide if they feel he can be a long-term answer in the backfield, or if they will need to invest in a running back in free agency or the draft.
